The Group for Research and Control Engineering (GRACE) of the University of Sannio in Benevento, Italy, is looking for a highly motivated researcher to develop her/his PhD thesis in control systems, in particular working on methodologies and key technologies for the development of safe and autonomous drones. Click here.

The candidate will work mainly for the COMP4DRONES project, https://www.comp4drones.eu, an H2020-ECSEL JU research project. The thesis will be focused on the scientific challenges related to model checking and abstraction applied to drones, viewed as complex cyber-physical systems. The goal is to propose methodologies and technical solutions for designing autonomous drones that guarantee specific formal properties by taking into account the physical model, the control architecture, and incorporate perception from the environment.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a background in the following areas: control systems, mathematical programming and robot control. Programming expertise in C/C++ or Python and familiarity with ROS and Gazebo will be highly appreciated. Candidates with a solid mathematics background will be preferred.

Application procedure

Practical info

The PhD program has a 3 year duration and the student will be supervised by a university professor (prof. Luigi Iannelli) and a postdoc researcher (Dr. Valerio Mariani). University of Sannio is located in the historical centre of Benevento, a small city in the inner part of Campania, South Italy, where life and neighborhoods are particularly pleasant for student life. PhD salary in Italy is established by law, about 15k€/year (gross) and it is surely adequate with respect to the cost of living in Benevento.

The UniSannio team is one of the two finalists for the Aerial robotics control and perception challenge at the 26th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation 2018. During the week 18th–23rd June 2018 Giuseppe Silano and Pasquale Oppido will compete with the other finalist team, by proposing their own controller for the Bebop drone that has to fulfill wind farm inspection tasks. Good luck, Giuseppe and Pasquale!! :-)

Our paper R. Iervolino, F. Vasca and L. Iannelli, Cone-Copositive Piecewise Quadratic Lyapunov Functions for Conewise Linear Systems has been accepted for publication on IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. The tentative scheduled issue of publication is vol. 60, issue 11, November 2015. Here you can find the preprint.

I would like to point out that there is an open PhD student position at the Department of Signals and Systems at the Chalmers University in Sweden. The topic is related to optimization and optimal control and, more specifically, the Integration of Airborne Wind Energy in the Power Grid. More details can be found at the link.

Do you want to know what is automation? Italian PhD students and PostDocs of the Polytechnic of Milan won the first edition of the IEEE CSS Video Clip Contest by proposing their clip called Automation. The Italian team beat several participants like BMW or the ETH of Zurich.

Today, from 5pm to 7pm, I will give a talk at the Universidad Industrial de Santander, in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

Actually, the talk will be in teleconference (I have never been in South America…;-)) and it is related to the I3RES EU project dealing with smart grids.

Why such a talk? Prof. Ricardo Alzate invited me to discuss about research stuff within his course to Master and PhD students. I hope they will enjoy! :-)
